Author: Tim Tender

Hi. My name is Tim. Pleasure to meet you! The paragraphs below give you some highlights about me. I hope you enjoy. Hockey first... I started playing hockey in 1999/2000 with my high school's JV team. I played some adult league hockey and worked at a rink from 1999 until I moved to Johnstown in 2005. I played sporadically from then until I moved to Madison in 2011. I took a year or so off just because I didn't know where to play here and I traveled a lot for work. Now, I'm finally able to join a league because I don't travel anymore. I've been with the MGHA since 2015 and have served on the Board for several of those year. I've also been a captain since 2016. More stuff... In addition to hockey, I enjoy TV, alternative music, and being outdoors. I play soccer, as well. I also used to host a music trivia / pop culture trivia / game show type-thing at a bar back home. Since moving to Madison, I now just host it for friends in my house every couple of months. My dream job is to be a game show host! Work... As far as work goes, I work for a division of The Weather Company (an IBM business) as a software tester. I've also freelanced on WMTV here in Madison. I used to work at a TV station in Johnstown, PA where I did weekend weather and produced weather graphics. It was fun, but it's nice to have a 9-5 job without having to work holidays. That's it for now. If you have any questions, find me on Twitter! I'm (at) TT_7.

Schedule Change (10/27 Practices and 11/3 Games)

Hey everyone!

The league that the Caps play in has mandated that all Sunday games start at 3 PM instead of 2 PM (unless ok’d by the visiting team).  This only impacts a few of our weeks, but there may be a few schedule changes throughout the season.  We’ll update you as we learn about them.  Aside from these two, the next Sunday home Caps game isn’t until December 1st.
As of now, here’s the schedule for this week’s practices and the first week of games (the 11/3 games may change if the visiting team approves of the 2 PM time)…

Sunday 10/27 (Practices)

Rink A

6:30 PM: Orange and Green (L2)

7:40 PM: Light Blue and Yellow (L2)

8:50 PM: Red and Blue (L2)

Rink B

5:00 PM: Black and Green (L1)

6:10 PM: Red and Orange (L1)

7:20 PM: Light Blue and Yellow (L1)

8:30 PM: Blue and White (L1)

Sunday 11/3 (Games)

Rink A

6:30 PM: Orange and Yellow (L2)

7:40 PM: Red and Light Blue (L2)

8:50 PM: Green and Blue (L2)

Rink B

5:00 PM: Light Blue and Red (L1)

6:10 PM: Black and Blue (L1)

7:20 PM: Yellow and Green (L1)

8:30 PM: Orange and White (L1) Couple of reminders:

  • Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to make sure you’re dressed in time to get on the ice.
  • While on the ice, helmets MUST stay on at all times for safety and insurance reasons.
  • Please mark yourself absent on the website if you’re going to miss.

Thank you all for your patience as we work through these growing pains. Can’t wait to see you all on the ice!

Championship Night Details

Can you believe our season is almost over? Honestly I feel like we just started!

But before we move on to summer (and the Classic!!) we have our Championship Night at Cap Ice. Saving the best for last!
We have a busy night that includes taking our on ice league photo and presenting the ‘MGHA All-The-Way’ Awards.

Here is the schedule of events for the night:

4:20pm – Rink B = MaroonyTunes VS Nightfuries
4:40pm – Rink A = Arrrnge VS Madison Blues
5:40pm – Rink B = Grayzly Bears VS Red Delicious
6:00pm – Rink A = Narwhals VS Snow Witte and the 14 Dwarfs
7:30pm – Rink A = Team photo! Please arrive at least 15 minutes early with your jersey
8:00pm – Rink A = ABBA: Gold VS Dancing Greens

Because of the alternating schedule. our current schedule for scorebox doesn’t really work. To solve this, we are asking for volunteers to work a shift instead. Please, PLEASE sign up for a shift here if you are able! Keep in mind when you are playing before signing up, especially for rink A.

Also, Cap Ice has graciously allowed us to still host our potluck at their rink. Please sign up for a dish to pass in the link below:

**IMPORTANT REMINDER: We are not allowed to bring in any of our own alcohol into the rink due to the Eagles Nest having a liquor license. Thank you for following their rules!***

Let us know if you have any questions!
See you Sunday!

March 31 / April 7 Schedule Changes

Hey everyone!

Hope you’re having a fantastic Saturday!

tl;dr:
– New schedules and location for March 31 and April 7 on website and Google calendar
– Can’t sub in overlapping games, alert captains if already subbing for another team
– Scorebox shifts will be adjusted, standby for that email

Full Message:
We’re coming down the home stretch of the season and with Hartmeyer going down early this season, we’re shifting our play to Cap Ice, the same venue that’ll host our MGHA Classic.  This’ll be a chance to check it out before the tournament in about a month.
That said, we’ll have some changes to the schedule and we wanted to pass those changes along to you.

image.png

You’ll see the schedule above.  Since Cap Ice has two sheets, our night will be condensed and nobody will have a super-late game.  The games at 5:30, 6:40, and 7:50 PM will play on Rink A.  The 6:00 and 7:10 PM games will be on Rink B.  Rink A is to the left and Rink B is to the right when you enter Cap Ice.

We’re working on adjusting scorebox shifts, so stay tuned for an email about that.
Also notice in the picture that we’ve adjusted the subbing procedure to account for overlapping games.  Notice that I can’t sign up for the 6 PM game because I have a game at 5:30 PM.  I can, however, sign up for the others.  When you are asked to sub by a captain, please be careful not to volunteer to sub in overlapping games.  Let them know if you’re already subbing for another team that day.

Championship night is April 7th.  We’ll also be running on two rinks.  We’ll still have the potluck.  We’ll still have the team picture.  Standby for more information on all of this coming soon.  Here’s a look at the schedule.  This will be based on the season-ending team standings.

4:20 PMRink B9th10th
4:40 PMRink A7th8th
5:40 PMRink B5th6th
6:00 PMRink A3rd4th
7:30 PMRink ALeague Picture
8:00 PMRink A1st2nd

That’s it for now.  Although we’re sad about the season ending, we’re really excited for the next two weeks!
See you at the rink,Tim (on behalf of the Board)

The night will be scheduled as follows:

February 3, 2019 Challenge Games

Hey everyone! It’s that time again… challenge game time!

This month’s challenge games will take place on February 3rd. The times are a little different than normal due to a conflict at Hartmeyer.

As usual, please sign up for a game where you can learn and play safely. While it’s good to challenge yourself, please only do so within your safe limits. Remember that in the advanced games, skaters do not ‘play down’ in the same way they do during the regular season MGHA games. As always, HOps reserves the right to shift players if we feel you have signed up for an unsafe level.

You may sign up for one game right away. On Saturday, February 2nd at 2 PM, you may sign up for a second game if there are spaces available. We’re also looking for a few bench coaches for the beginner game. If you feel you have sound hockey knowledge and can help our beginners, feel free to sign up!

The night will be scheduled as follows:

5:45 PM – Advanced Game
6:55 PM – Beginner Game
8:05 PM – High Intermediate Game
9:15 PM – Low Intermediate Game

January 2019: Challenge Games and More

Welcome back to hockey in the new year! 2019 is starting off with a bang with our challenge games… and more!

First, we’re having our normal 4 challenge games on January 6th. We’ll do 2 early and 2 late and sandwiched in between will be a half-ice skills clinic and a half-ice goalie curious session.

First, the challenge games… as usual, please sign up for a game where you can learn and play safely.

On Saturday, January 5th at 4 PM, you may sign up for a second game if there are spaces available. We’re also looking for a few bench coaches for the beginner game. If you feel you have sound hockey knowledge and can help our beginners, feel free to sign up!

In the middle slot at 7:10 PM, we’re hosting two special events. First, we’re having a session we like to call ‘goalie curious’. Basically, if you’ve ever wanted to try goalie, now’s your chance. We have limited equipment and we’ll do what we can to get you suited up but this is first come, first served based on size. We want everyone to try it, but our resources are limited.

In addition to ‘goalie curious’, we’re hosting a mini skills clinic. This is intended as more of a shake-off-the-rust kind of clinic to get you back into the groove. This is more geared toward beginner and intermediate players, but all are welcome. Please sign up so that we know how many plan to attend.

The night will be scheduled as follows:

4:50 PM – High Intermediate Game
6:00 PM – Advanced Game
7:10 PM – Goalie Curious / Mini Skills Clinic
8:20 PM – Low Intermediate Game
9:30 PM – Beginner Game

See you on the ice!

Thanksgiving Weekend Challenge Games 2018

Our challenge games are coming up this weekend. Since it’s early in the season, we have some reminders.  PLEASE ONLY SIGN UP FOR ONE GAME until noon on Saturday, November 24th. Please sign up for a game where you can learn and play safely.  We’ll have two intermediate games (one for lower intermediate players and one for higher intermediate players), a game for beginners, and a game for advanced players.  It’s a good idea to challenge yourself as the season progresses, but only within your limits.  In the advanced games, skaters do not “play down” in some of the ways that they try to do in our regular season games.  More advanced players who sign up for a scrimmage below their skill level should facilitate game play for players who fit well in that skill level.  Inclusive play is exceptionally important in such a situation.  For safety, HOps reserves the right to shift players if we feel you have signed up for a level that doesn’t match your skill.

The games will be scheduled as follows:

5:15 PM – Low Intermediate Game
6:30 PM – Beginner Game
7:45 PM – Advanced Game
9:00 PM – High Intermediate Game

See you on the ice!

Hopefully you all recovered from the team reveal.  It was a fun night and we hope you had a great time.  Now that we have teams, we should probably get to know one another better.  Lucky for us, we have two weeks of practice with our team.

October 28
4:50 PM: Gray and Red
6:00 PM: Light Blue and Orange

2018 Team Reveal and Challenge Games

Hey everybody!

Thanks so much for all of the hard work during the evaluations the last couple of weeks.  We really appreciate it!

A quick note about the evaluation scrimmages from Sunday night.  We strive to always play the MGHA way (passing a lot, friendly play, etc) but evaluation scrimmages are a little different because we need to see where you fall in the spectrum for the sake of even team creation.  I apologize if this message was lost last night.  If you’re new to the league, please know that games throughout the season have a different pace and different feel.  As a developmental league, we strive to make sure everyone feels included and nobody feels overwhelmed.  We look forward to starting the season with all of you.

That said, we’re starting our season off with our annual team reveal and challenge game night!  We’ll have three scrimmage-style games on Sunday along with team reveal.  Here’s the schedule for October 14th:

  • Beginner Scrimmage – 5:15 PM
  • Advanced Scrimmage – 6:30 PM
  • Team Reveal – 7:45 PM
  • Intermediate Scrimmage – 9:00 PM

Team reveal is one of the best events of the season because it is where you learn what team you’re on and you have the opportunity to bond a little bit, learning names/pronouns and starting to think of team names.  It’s a fun night and I encourage everyone to show up for team reveal by 7:30 PM.

This is also our first challenge game night of the season.  As far as challenge games go, here are a few bits of information…

Please only sign up for one game (until 12 noon on Saturday, October 13th).  We want to make sure everyone has a chance to sign up (and not everyone in the league can check their computers or phones multiple times per day). As usual, there are 30 slots for skaters per game along with two roster spots for goalies.  You’ll need to sign into the website to sign up for a scrimmage slot.  I’ll put a link at the bottom of this email.

Unlike season games, challenge games are sorted based on skill level. Players choose at what level of play they can safely and most happily play.  Self-selection is a privilege and must be considered carefully.  It’s okay to play down a level, but you must understand that inclusive play is especially important.  A person playing down is there to facilitate fun and safe hockey play for newer skaters.  If you choose to play up, please be aware that the usual level of inclusive play does not apply.  Advanced skaters are there to challenge one another and work on their hockey skills.  Further, playing beyond one’s ability can create an unsafe environment for the individual skater and everyone else on the ice.

Particularly since this is the first scrimmage and in the interest of safety, Hockey Operations reserves the right to ask you to move to a different time slot.  This is not meant to single anyone out but to ensure that everyone can play safely and effectively.

As with last season, we’ll switch up the schedule for who has the early, middle, and late games for other challenge nights throughout the season.  Also, due to the limited ice time on Sunday, we’ll only have one intermediate slot.  That means you’ll need to sign up quickly.  If you sign up and cannot make it, please remove your name from the slot.  We’ll typically have two slots… one for lower and one for upper intermediate.

Here’s the link for the challenge game signup.  This link will not be valid until 8 PM on Tuesday, October 9.  Be sure to sign in!

See you on the ice!
