Frequently asked questions about joining:
· I've applied before. How do I join?
If you’ve created an account in the past, you don’t need to make another one to join the league.
Contact recruiting to be considered for next season.
· When do we recruit?
Recruiting kicks off in June and runs until our rosters are full. Historically we’ve been full by mid-August. We accept applications all year, but our attention is focused most on recruiting during the summer months. During recruiting season you can expect a reply generally within 2-3 days. It may take a bit longer outside of recruiting season.
· Do you have to be LGBTQ+ to join?
Of course not; however, we do prioritize queer and marginalized players in our recruiting process. The truth of the matter is, there are a lot of great places in Madison to play hockey, but not all of those are great or welcoming to queer and marginalized folks. We’re here first and foremost to make space for people who haven’t always been able to play hockey in those other spaces, and those people are going to get first shot at a roster spot.
· Do I need to know how to skate/play hockey to join?
Nope! We have players of all skill levels in our league, from people who’ve never put skates on before to people who’ve played at a high level. In fact, we pride ourselves on playing inclusive, friendly hockey and playing games where every player feels valued on their team. On top of our weekly games, we also offer optional skills clinics and practices for players who want to improve their hockey and skating abilities. There’s a place for you, no matter what your skill level may be.
· How much does it cost to join?
We strive to make hockey as accessible as possible, especially since the LGBTQ+ population is at risk of increased financial instability. Because of this, we offer aid for both league fees and gear, as well as payment plans, as needed.
While we haven’t set the fees for the coming year yet, historically they’ve been approximately $275 for the September-March season. Players also must have a full set of equipment. We work with new players to help them find the right gear, whether that’s new or used, and also have gear assistance available through a grant program for queer players who qualify.
Finally, we require everyone on the ice is registered annually with USA Hockey, approximately $40. Registration provides health insurance benefits to our players, which is why we generally don’t allow people from outside the league skate with us. If anyone on the ice isn’t registered we’d be unsanctioned, which means that we have no insurance whatsoever as a league and the insurance benefits for our players also don’t count. Registration also protects our league’s legal liability in the cases of claims for physical and personal injury, property damage, and liability insurance under the umbrella USA Hockey organization which helps us lower dues. Further specifics and frequently asked questions can be found here.
Cost should not be a barrier to playing hockey with us! We are committed to making hockey and our league accessible to all, regardless of need.
· What’s the time commitment?
Games, practices and clinics start in September and run every Sunday night until the end of March or beginning of April, minus a couple of holidays. Games last an hour, but keep in mind it also takes time to put on and take off your gear. We may offer additional ice time throughout the season for things like clinics and scrimmages, but it’s not mandatory. Hockey is a team sport, and we do strongly encourage that you be able to commit to making most Sundays.
