********* VOTE NO TODAY *************************
On the order of 1,400 legal rights are conferred upon married couples in the U.S. Typically these are composed of about 400 state benefits and over 1,000
federal benefits. Among them are the rights to:
joint parenting;
joint adoption;
joint foster care, custody, and visitation (including non-biological parents);
status as next-of-kin for hospital visits and medical decisions where one partner is too ill to be competent;
joint insurance policies for home, auto and health;
dissolution and divorce protections such as community property and child support;
immigration and residency for partners from other countries;
inheritance automatically in the absence of a will;
joint leases with automatic renewal rights in the event one partner dies or leaves the house or apartment;
inheritance of jointly-owned real and personal property through the right of survivorship (which avoids the time and expense and taxes in probate);
benefits such as annuities, pension plans, Social Security, and Medicare;
spousal exemptions to property tax increases upon the death of one partner who is a co-owner of the home;
veterans' discounts on medical care, education, and home loans; joint filing of tax returns;
joint filing of customs claims when traveling;
wrongful death benefits for a surviving partner and children;
bereavement or sick leave to care for a partner or child;
decision-making power with respect to whether a deceased partner will be cremated or not and where to bury him or her;
crime victims' recovery benefits;
loss of consortium tort benefits;
domestic violence protection orders;
judicial protections and evidentiary immunity;
VOTE NO on the amendment. Turn the ballot over and VOTE NO.

3. Fundraising
Last Friday at the Shamrock Felicia Melton-Smyth donated 3 pairs of tickets to the "Thunder from Down Under" show this Saturday at the Majestic. Shawn Waldron, Dan Feeney, Galen Lemke, Terrence Schaaf, Gilbert Villalpando and myself were there to sell raffle tickets for them and collected an even $300. Please be sure to thank Felicia whenever you see her for supporting our league. Our first official fundraiser will be a date auction that Shawn is organizing with Felicia to be held at the Shamrock on December 2nd. Please consider volunteering for this. It is explicitly platonic and we encourage you getting a few of your friends to come bid on you. Contact Shawn for details at swaldron2@gmail.com
4. Photos
David Parter has promised to have the photo section of our site published in the next few days. I have given him loads of photos from our first few weeks and some behind the scenes stuff to post that can be browsed in albums built right into our pages. Please ask him about them every chance you can
5. Skating Clinics
We've had an impressive turnout at our studio rink early clinics and I would like to encourage you to take advantage of any ice time you can get to practice. Our skating coach, Brett, is making a lot of effort to tailor drills to help beginners learn and improve and is there every week ready to step on the ice and start exactly at 7:05. Also, please take advantage of the Shell open ice public skating. I have the times posted when I will be there on our calender. I am there every Thursday and Saturday nights. Often Mark Sadowski is with me on Thursdays and Brett on Saturdays. This past Saturday we had about 15 people. Visit their site for additional times (
http://www.recsports.wisc.edu/facilities/shell/schedule/icerink_schedule.htm
).
6. Safety
Just a reminder this is a developmental league. We have a strong majority of players who are still learning very basic skills and we need our competitive players to be very ready to scale back to casual recreational play and focus on one-ice and bench coaching their line mates. As people are still learning the proper ways to hold their sticks and stop, I want to take whatever precautions possible to stress safety. Please remember to keep your heads up, watch where you are going. Skate only as fast as you can control, keep your sticks down on the ice to prevent hitting someone with them. Contact is unavoidable in hockey, but handled responsibility can be a fun part of the game.
7. Schedule
After drafting the teams the captains and myself adjusted the schedule to a program that we think works best for our group. This coming Sunday (November 12) is unique. Each hour is split between a 30 minute hockey clinic and a 30 minute team scrimmage. Here are our time assignments:
HOUR 1: Red vs. Teal
HOUR 2: Black vs. Grey
Starting next week the clinic portion of our program is limited to the 7:05 studio rink skating clinics. Then each hour of our main ice will be spent as doing warmup drills for 8 minutes, followed by three 14 minute periods with about 2 minutes between periods. The warmup drills will be team specific and lead by each captain starting promptly at the either 7:50 or 9:00.
8. Player Profiles
Please, if you are one of the few remaining take some time to write a bio and send a photo to me so I can get you up on the site. These pages become more valuable by the day
