MGHA Classic Hockey Tournament: April 30 - May 2 2010

The first annual MGHA Classic LGBT Ice Hockey Tournament will be held April 30 - May 1, 2010.

The goals of the MGHA tournament are:

  • To share the MGHA spirit and community with other LGBTQA and non-LGBTQA hockey leagues and players.
  • To provide a competitive hockey experience for MGHA players at all levels.
  • To expose the MGHA players to the larger LGBTQA hockey community.
  • To provide increased visibility for the MGHA.

The tournament is open to all MGHA players and any non-MGHA players who wish to compete in the MGHA Classic, participate in an LGBTQA hockey tournament in the spirit of friendly competition. All players must be USA Hockey registered (non-US players please contact us prior to registration).

Tournament Format

The tournament will be co-ed no-checking and have two divisions: Recreational and Competitive:

  • The recreational division is for newer players. The level of play will approximately the lower 2/3 of the MGHA house league. For references, this is also equal to all but the top tier of the Chelsea Challenge "developmental" division.
  • The competitive division is for more experienced and stronger players. The level of play of approximately the top 1/3 of the MGHA house league players and higher. For reference, this would be the top players from the Chelsea Challenge developmental division and higher.

Players will register as individual players, and submit a skills self-assessment. The Tournament Committee will select captains and assign players to teams within the divisions. The Tournament committee may assign players to a division as appropriate.

Each division will have four teams of 10-15 skaters and one goalie. Each division will play a round-robin on Friday night (1 game each) and Saturday (2 games each). Championship games will be played on Sunday. We may schedule semi-final or third-place games on Sunday as well.

Game Rules

Final game rules will be published before the tournament. All games will be played under USA Hockey no-check Adult rules with USA Hockey officials. The recreational division will not allow slapshots. Slapshots will be allowed in the competitive division. All games will be one hour.

Off-ice Events
We will have a Tournament Reception at the Brass Ring on Saturday night. We are working on plans for additional social activities Friday and Saturday night.

Registration Fee

Early-bird registration is $65 per player (extended through March 29). Registration includes all game fees, tournament jersey, and hospitality events.

Tournament Location

All games will be played at Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, WI. Other events will be held elsewhere in the Madison area.
