Frequently asked questions about joining:

When do we recruit?

Recruiting kicks off in June and runs until preseason starts in September and rosters are full. We are flexible and accept applications all year, but our attention is focused most on recruiting during the summer months. During recruiting season you can expect a reply generally within 2-3 days. It may take a bit longer outside of recruiting season.

I’ve applied before. How do I join?

If you’ve created an account in the past, you don’t need to make another one to join the league.

Contact recruiting to be considered for next season.

Do you have to be LGBTQ+ to join?

Of course not; however, we do prioritize queer and marginalized players in our recruiting process. The truth of the matter is, there are a lot of great places in Madison to play hockey, but not all of those are great or welcoming to queer and marginalized folks. We’re here first and foremost to make space for people who haven’t always been able to play hockey in those other spaces, and those people are going to get first shot at a roster spot.

Do I need to know how to skate/play hockey to join?

Nope! We have players of all skill levels in our league, from people who’ve never put skates on before to people who’ve played at a high level. In fact, we pride ourselves on playing inclusive, friendly hockey and playing games where every player feels valued on their team. On top of our weekly games, we also offer optional skills clinics and practices for players who want to improve their hockey and skating abilities. There’s a place for you, no matter what your skill level may be.

How much does it cost to join?

We strive to make hockey as accessible as possible, especially since the LGBTQ+ population is at risk of increased financial instability. Because of this, we offer aid for both league fees and gear, as well as payment plans, as needed.

Cost for the full season 2022-2023 is $350, including at least 15 games and subbing opportunities. Players also must have a full set of equipment. We work with new players to help them find the right gear, whether that’s new or used, and also have gear assistance available through a grant program for queer players who qualify.

Everyone in the MGHA who skates onto the ice must be registered with USA Hockey – registration costs about $40-$50 a season. USA Hockey provides liability coverage to our league as well as insurance benefits to individual players. All players in a USA Hockey sanctioned league like ours must be registered for the participants and organization to be covered. Read more here.

Cost should not be a barrier to playing hockey with us! We are committed to making hockey and our league accessible to all, regardless of need.

What’s the time commitment?

Games, practices and clinics start in September and run every Sunday night until the end of March or beginning of April, minus a couple of holidays. Games last an hour, but keep in mind it also takes time to put on and take off your gear. We may offer additional ice time throughout the season for things like clinics and scrimmages, but it’s not mandatory. Hockey is a team sport, and we do strongly encourage that you be able to commit to making most Sundays.
